Jewish Scholarship Service of Greater Pittsburgh

Jewish Scholarship Service of Greater Pittsburgh coordinates the efforts of a group of organizations, agencies and scholarship endowment funds that provide scholarships to local Jewish students enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education.

JSS provides financial support to as many eligible students in our community as possible. Demonstrated financial need is a primary criterion in evaluating applicants. Financial information is considered along with other pertinent facts such as family size and the number of children/siblings in college. While we generally do not assist students with family incomes in excess of 5x the federal poverty level or who have investable assets of more than $250,000, exceptions may be made when there are extenuating family circumstances, at the discretion of the JSS committee.

  • Any Jewish high school senior or those enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or technical school with financial need who are bona fide residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties for 2+ years are eligible to apply.
  • Residency of dependent students is determined by the residency of their parents.
  • Graduate students are encouraged to apply and are assessed independently.
  • Students who move to our geographical area to attend school must live here for two years as an independent. We follow FAFSA rules in defining “independent” (24 years of age or older (born before a certain date so you turn 24 during that school year); married; graduate student; a veteran or active duty member of the armed forces; an orphan or ward of the court; someone with legal dependents, other than a spouse).
  • Residents of Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Lawrence, Mercer or Venango counties are only eligible to apply for the Sarah and Tena Goldstein Memorial Scholarship. ** this fund is extremely competitive **
  • Residents of Lawrence County: If your parents/grandparents are/were members of Temple Hadar Israel in New Castle, you may be eligible to apply for the Marianne Hess Scholarship Endowment Fund.

All funding sources require students to demonstrate financial need. Depending on the scholarship fund, factors such as academic achievement, field of study, and school attending. Jewish and general community involvement will also be considered.

When students apply for aid, the scholarship committee matches the students with the funding source or sources for which they qualify. All information provided to JSS is treated confidentially and is used to process applications, distribute grants and to collect on previous loans. Individuals are known by number, not name, to ensure confidentiality.
