JF&CS’s CEO honored for exceptional leadership in the region

Aryeh Sherman, JF&CS President & CEO, was recently honored with the 2013 Diamond Award by the Pittsburgh Business Times for outstanding leadership.

Each year, the Pittsburgh Business Times presents the Diamond Award to a selection of the region’s top CEOs, Executive Directors and equivalents at companies or non-profit organizations in western Pennsylvania who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in the region. The Diamond Awards honor and recognize the most accomplished business leaders of small, medium and large for-profit companies, as well as nonprofit organizations.

Aryeh was one of four winners in the nonprofit category, and among 16 total winners of this year’s Diamond Awards, including Edgar Snyder, president of Edgar Snyder & Associates and long-time supporter of JF&CS and SOS Pittsburgh, one of the winners in the large for-profit company category.

“I am honored to be recognized with this year’s Diamond Award, among so many outstanding and accomplished leaders in our region,” Aryeh said. “This recognition is not only an achievement for myself, but for everyone at JF&CS. We could not accomplish all that we do at JF&CS without our exceptional staff and the tremendous and unwavering support of our community partners, volunteers, donors, funders and supporters.”

Aryeh began his tenure at JF&CS in April of 1999, and has more than 25 years’ experience in the delivery and administration of social service programs in the areas of community-based services for the elderly, refugee resettlement, family development and career and vocational services. Throughout his tenure at JF&CS, Aryeh has successfully transformed the organization to ensure the agency is more responsive to community needs.

Under his leadership, JF&CS is now the leading agency in the region providing a wide range of resettlement and legal services to refugees and immigrants throughout our region and helping approximately 1,000 people annually to settle in the Greater Pittsburgh region. Through the building of partnerships, JF&CS has been able to significantly expand services in multiple areas; the AgeWell Pittsburgh partnership is a nationally recognized community-based model of aging services and the recently-formed WorkAble program expands JF&CS career services throughout Allegheny County by partnering with other nonprofits geographically situated in key areas of need.

In a time of great financial distress for the non-profit sector, JF&CS, under Aryeh’s leadership, was able to expand services to vulnerable populations and build the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry, one of the largest food pantries in the region, servicing more than 1,200 people annually from the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh.

“I look forward to continuing to lead JF&CS and direct our priorities as a social service agency,” Aryeh said. “As more and more people in our communities face overwhelming challenges and crises, our services and programs are more necessary than ever, and we’ll continue to be here to address our community’s needs.”
