Generations of Volunteers at the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry

Former longtime JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry volunteer Neil Blumenfeld volunteered with the pantry for many years. Now his 10-year-old granddaughter Geffen is learning about giving back to the community by volunteering at the pantry! When Geffen heard that her grandpa used to volunteer at the JFCS food pantry she knew she wanted to visit. Geffen explained how it was a way to become closer to Neil and see how he used to spend his time helping others.

During Geffen’s first time at the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, one of her favorite things was seeing the kosher items being readily available for people who need that option. She believes in helping people and enjoys learning about ways to help the earth. The popular animated Pixar film Wall-E inspired her to care about the environment, “once I saw how big the people were in the movie and how dirty the earth became,” she explained.

Geffen took this piece as a warning for children to help move forward towards change. She wants everyone to know that “We should be grateful for having this earth and not living in a spaceship.” We love seeing passion for change and helping the community being passed down through the family!
