Do you remember the last time you needed help from someone? Whether it was from a friend, a family member, or a community resource, we all find ourselves in need at certain points in our lives. When we’re able to use shared resources during these critical times, it allows us to then, in turn, help others.
AgeWell Rides is an AgeWell Pittsburgh program intended to serve that purpose. The program is for older adults ages 60+ who live within Pittsburgh’s city limits and no longer drive. Through volunteers, these adults receive rides to local appointments, meetings, shopping, or events.
To older adults using the program, getting a ride means more than just getting from Point A to Point B. AgeWell Rides helps keep these older adults active and independent, which is crucial to their mental health and well-being. It eases the sadness of giving up driving, which is hard for many people to deal with as they age.
Additionally, it allows older adults to be less dependent on family members for transportation. And for those who don’t have family in the area, this resource is even more critical.
Drivers and riders forge deep and meaningful bonds during these short trips. One volunteer found that providing a ride ended up being the highlight of her week. “I’d had kind of a bad week, and Betsy was the best medicine I could have asked for!” she said. “I hadn’t seen her in a while, and we had a wonderful time catching up.”
In another instance, an AgeWell Rides volunteer drove a client to cast her vote in the primary election. Afterward, they decided to tour Squirrel Hill, reminiscing about their individual experiences there. This simple ride to cast a vote turned into an afternoon of conversation and connection for both our volunteer and our client.

Frequently asked questions about AgeWell Rides
What do I need to volunteer?
The standard volunteer application process for all JFCS volunteers includes submitting an application, along with two references, and completing an interview. Once approved, all volunteers will attend an orientation session before starting their work.
Because of the nature of their volunteer role, AgeWell Rides volunteers are also required to provide the following:
- Clearances (Act 33, Act 34, and FBI Background Check)
- Their PA driving record
- Copies of their driver’s license and car insurance

Do I need to be available for rides all the time?
No, AgeWell Rides volunteering is very flexible! Our staff shares the days, times, and details of upcoming rides with volunteers, who can then sign up for the rides that fit their availability. Volunteers are required to complete at least one ride each month, though more is always welcome.
I don’t have experience helping people who need mobility support, and I’m worried I won’t be able to help someone get in and out of the car. Do I need to be doing this?
Volunteer drivers are there to provide transportation support, but they shouldn’t be lifting older adult clients in and out of cars. Volunteers also aren’t required to help older adults once they reach their destinations, though sometimes they choose to. To participate in the AgeWell Rides program, older adults must be able to independently get to and from the car and navigate their destination on their own.
Do I need to stay with the older adult during their appointment?
No, this isn’t necessary! You’re free to leave them after dropping them off and then come back to pick them up.
I’m concerned about the liability of driving someone. What happens if I get into an accident?
In the event of an accident, JFCS’s insurance will act as a secondary insurance while the driver’s insurance is primary. In addition, all riders sign a legal Waiver of Liability releasing participants in the program from any and all liability, except in the case of negligence or willful misconduct.
