Did You Know? The food pyramid is old news!

Did You Know…?

The food pyramid is old news! The USDA now uses a tool called MyPlate as a guide to achieving well-balanced nutrition.

According to the USDA, “it’s important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy and fortified soy alternatives. Choose options for meals, beverages, and snacks that have limited added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium.”

The USDA website provides quizzes to assess your nutrition and resources to create your own MyPlate plan based on your age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity level (available in both English and Spanish) at https://www.myplate.gov/myplate-plan. Their website also provides resources based on your stage in life – from childhood through adolescence through motherhood through adulthood. There are plenty of print materials such as crosswords and word searches to educate children on well-balanced eating. Finally, the USDA provides recipes and cooking demos based on your needs. Feel free to let us know which tools and resources you find most helpful!
