Can You Work While Receiving Social Security Benefits? Yes You Can!

Employment options for individuals receiving social security benefits is the topic of an upcoming program co-presented by Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JF&CS) and Jewish Residential Services (JRS) as part of the educational series AIM: Support for Families of Individuals with Special Needs.

The presentation, “Can You Work While Receiving SSI or SSDI Benefits? Yes You Can!” will be held Monday, March 2nd from 6 – 8 p.m. at the JF&CS offices located at 5743 Bartlett Street in Squirrel Hill. This program was rescheduled from January after it was cancelled because of weather conditions.

Keynote speaker Anthony Bibbo, Certified Work Incentive Coordinator, works as part of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Work Incentive Planning and Assistance (WIPA) program. Bibbo will discuss how social security beneficiaries can transition from total dependence on public benefits to paid employment and greater economic self-sufficiency.

“Fostering a sense of self-sufficiency through employment is key to helping individuals with special needs and disabilities lead fulfilling and independent lives,” said Linda Marino, Critical & Special Needs Resource Coordinator at JF&CS. “A lot of times, individuals receiving social security benefits are afraid that if they work, they’ll lose their benefits–but that’s not true. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for individuals with special needs or a disability and their family members to access information, resources and support related to SSI or SSDI benefits. Hopefully, all family members will come away with a better understanding of what options exist for themselves or their loved ones.”

The presentation is free and open to the community and includes a light kosher meal at 6 p.m. Registration is required. For more information or to register, email Linda Marino at lmarino@jfcspgh.org or call 412-422-7200.
