10/27 Commemoration Events for 2022

10/27 Commemorative Ceremony

The Commemorative Ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 4pm at Prospect Drive in Schenley Park. This event is open to the public. At this gathering we will hear songs from local choirs, we will light candles for the eleven lives taken, and we will stand together in remembrance and solidarity. The commemorative ceremony will last approximately one hour, and the recording will be available on the 10.27 Healing Partnership website at 7pm on October 27th.

Other events and service opportunities will be held leading up to and following the Commemorative Ceremony


October 21

Commemorative Community Event: Shabbat Solidarity | 6:30-8:30pm

Join Friendship Circle, Ratzon, and Repair the World to gather for a 10.27 Commemorative Shabbat rooted in healing, community building, and solidarity. Together, we will welcome in Shabbat, honoring the memories of the elders we lost on October 27th, 2018 and reflecting on how we can work toward a world free from violence and oppression. Vegan and gluten free dinner options will be available. October 23

10.27 Days of Service: Tranquility Garden Wrap Up | 2-4pm

Join Grounded for raised garden bed construction, garden bed filling and planting, and sealing a picnic table at a community lot in Wilkinsburg. No experience necessary! | Ages: This project is for all ages. Accessibility: Parts of the site are not wheelchair accessible; there is a sloped driveway and uneven terrain. That said, the table will be moved toward the sidewalk for wheelchair accessibility. Project will involved lifting, bending standing, etc. No bathroom easily accessible, aside from the BP down the street (requires driving). 10.27 Days of Service: JFCS Grounding Bracelets | 11am-2pm

Join Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) to make a grounding bracelets. Make one for yourself and one for a member of a local immigrant / refugee family or a person who has to attend the 10.27 trial. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for all ages. Accessibility: This project will be done indoors, inside the JFCS conference room. It is wheelchair accessible. N95, KN95, or KF94 masks will be required and can be provided if needed. 10.27 Days of Service: Prepping for a New Year of Friendship | 12-2pm 

Join the Friendship Circle in assembling activity supply kits for upcoming birthday parties for friends, Friends at Home group get togethers, and other Friendship Circle events! On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for all ages. Accessibility: Space is wheelchair accessible, both from the back and front door. Project can be adapted as needed. 10.27 Days of Service: Sheridan Ave. Orchard Teen Service | 1:30-3:30pm

Join Repair the World Pittsburgh for a teen service project in the Sheridan Ave. Orchard. We will be doing some basic garden maintenance and continue laying a pathway to make the orchard wheelchair accessible. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for teens only. Accessibility: The majority of the garden / orchard has uneven ground and is not yet ADA compliant. This project involves working on an accessible pathway. Accessible restrooms across the street. 10.27 Days of Service: JCBA Cemeteries Cleanup | 10am-3:30pm

Join the Jewish Cemetery and Burial Association of Greater Pittsburgh (JCBA) for a cemetery cleanup in memory of Marc Simon’s parents Bernice and Sylvan Simon, z”l. This cleanup is being planned in partnership with Marc Simon. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for all ages. Accessibility: The cemetery space is not wheelchair accessible. 10.27 Days of Service: Kesher Painting Stones of Love & Hope | 10am-12pm

Together with Kesher Pittsburgh, we’ll paint stones with messages of love and hope. As we go our separate ways, we’ll deliver them to various neighborhoods around the city, leaving them to brighten the days of all those who encounter them. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for families with children only. Accessibility: The space is wheelchair accessible, and the project will be outdoors. October 27

JFCS therapists will be available outside Tree of Life from 8am-3pm, as well as on-site at the Commemoration Ceremony at 4pm on Prospect Drive.

Commemorative Torah Study: Judy Klitsner | 12-1pm

All Torah study organized by 10.27 Healing Partnership on October 27th is virtual.

Judy Klitsner is a senior educator at the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. A disciple of the great Torah teacher Nehama Leibowitz, Judy has brought her empowering, text-based, meaning-oriented, teaching style to a generation of students at Pardes. Throughout the years, she has taught laypeople, leaders and rabbis across the denominational spectrum, as well as groups of Christian and Muslim students of the Bible. Judy is the author of the groundbreaking book Subversive Sequels in the Bible: How Biblical Stories Mine and Undermine Each Other, now in its fourth printing, which won a National Jewish Book Award. She is founding board chair of Sacred Spaces, an organization that seeks to address abuses of power in Jewish institutions.  

Judy is currently working on a pilot for an original online commentary to the Bible.

Torah Study topic: Are Victims Necessarily Martyrs: Using Rabbinic texts to think about how we frame the death of innocent victims

10.27 Days of Service: Levinson Patio Beautification | 10am-12pm

Join the Mallinger family and AgeWell at the JCC as we continue beautifying the Levinson Patio to welcome the gathering of older adults there. This event is being hosted in memory of Rose Mallinger, z”l, who was an active participant in AgeWell programs. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for teens and adults only. Accessibility: There is a ramp up to the patio from outside. 10.27 Days of Service: House of Manna Clean Up | 2-4pm

Join the Black Urban Gardeners & Farmers of Pittsburgh Co-op and House of Manna for an afternoon of trash pickup, tree pruning, and grass cutting outside the House of Manna building. This will be the site of the new Freedom Foods Co-op, a cooperatively run grocery to serve the Homewood community. | Ages: This program is for people of all ages. Accessibility: The parking lot and building are wheelchair accessible. Parts of the side of the building are not. 10.27 Days of Service: NCJW Book Labelling | 9:30-11am

Join the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) to assist in labeling donated books that are distributed to families who come through the children’s rooms at local courts. This project is being led in memory of Joyce Feinberg, z”l, who volunteered with NCJW for over 20 years. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for all ages. 10.27 Days of Service: Gun Safety Voter Engagement PhoneBank | 3:30-5:50pm

Join CeaseFirePA, Squirrel Hill Stands Against Gun Violence, and Bend the Arc: Jewish Action Pittsburgh to talk to voters about the importance of voting their values on gun safety. We will engage voters to make a plan to vote on November 8 and help them navigate questions on mail in voting, early in person voting, and voting at the polls. This project is in memory of Jerry Rabinowitz, z”l. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This program is for teens and adults only. 10.27 Days of Service: Schenley Park Teen Service | 1:30-3:30pm

Join Repair the World’s PeerCorps program and the The Second Floor at the JCC for a teen service project in Schenley Park. Teens will assist with the beautification of the fence and area surrounding the memorial trees to commemorate the 11 lives lost on 10/27/2018. On Sundays from October 16th through November 6th, we invite the community to engage in service-learning to Remember, Reflect, In Spirit and Action. These programs are being hosted in collaboration with the 10.27 Healing Partnership. — Ages: This project is for middle and high schoolers only. 10.27 Days of Service: Sorting & Packing Medical Supplies | 10am-12pm

Assist Global Links by sorting and packing medical supplies to help improve healthcare in communities with need. | Ages: This program is for adults & teens only.
