How to Pick a Career: Tips and Resources

Choosing a career will shape your future, influence your happiness, and determine your financial stability. No big deal, right?

It is important to make an informed decision, but it is equally important to take this process one step at a time. Here are some tips and resources that will help you pursue small, achievable goals, and balance the gravity of career choices with hopefulness and excitement for new opportunities to grow.

Start with a Self-Assessment

The first step in choosing a career is understanding yourself. Take a moment to jot down the following:

  • Interests and hobbies: What do you enjoy doing or learning about the most?
  • Strengths: What are your best technical skills and natural talents that also energize you?
  • Values: What do you want to stand for in your professional life?
  • Personality: Do you prefer working independently or in a team? What easily annoys you?
  • Lifestyle: Do you want a job with regular hours, or are you willing to work irregular schedules or travel extensively? How about long-term lifestyle goals?

Consider using a self-assessment tool to gain insights into your preferences and strengths. Remember that while these tests can provide valuable insights, they are not the sole determinant of your career choices. You are your best advocate and should explore careers that interest you and align with your goals and values even if they are not explicitly highlighted in the results.

Helpful Career Research Websites

Once you have a better understanding of yourself, start exploring potential careers.

You can start with the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which provides detailed information about various careers including required education and salary ranges. O*NET Online also offers comprehensive information on job tasks, skills, and educational requirements. Consider factors like job availability, salary potential, and job satisfaction when evaluating career options.

Tap Into Your Network

Once you’ve narrowed down some potential careers and aspirational job titles, check with friends, family and social media for people in your network who work in the field or who have contacts with similar job titles. Ask them for an introduction so that you can request an informational interview to learn about their career journey, as well as tips and watch-outs as you are choosing a career path.

Gain Experience to Evaluate Job Prospects

Hands-on experience can help you confirm your career choice and make you more attractive to potential employers. Internships and job shadowing are great options. Joining a professional association or volunteering to support their events is a great way to gain exposure to the culture in that career environment and to get noticed by leaders in the field.

Choosing a Career is a Marathon Not a Sprint

Remember that choosing a career is a process that takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and trust that with the right research and self-awareness, you’ll find a career that aligns with your passions and goals.
