300 slow cookers arrive at SHCFP, thanks to one generous donor

Recently, a long-time Pantry supporter and volunteer for more than 10 years –Naomi Weisberg Siegel — made a generous donation to SHCFP for the purchase of slow cookers to be distributed to Pantry clients and families. With her donation, SHCFP was able to purchase 300 crock pots from Costco at the Waterfront, which also generously supplied several employees to help with the delivery earlier last month.

The donation was so impressive that it was featured throughout Pittsburgh’s local media outlets, including articles in the Post-Gazette, Tribune Review, the Jewish Chronicle and even WPXI (Channel 11)! We hope you’ll read the articles below to learn more about Naomi, SHCFP and this generous act of kindness.

SHCFP serves 1,700 individuals and families annually from the 15217 ZIP code, as well as kosher households outside of 15217 and those in surrounding communities in need of emergency food.

This unique donation designation truly showcases SHCFP’s dedication to ensuring client dignity and choice when it comes to individual food preferences, underscored through our client-choice model, which resembles a small grocery store. These slow cookers are a powerful tool in respecting our clients’ autonomy and providing more options for easy, fresh, nutritious and home-cooked meals.

Additionally, SHCFP will offer a nutritional education component with an AmeriCorps HealthCorps fellow at the Pantry to ensure clients are able to fully maximize the use of their new slow cookers with their Pantry food items and produce from the SHCFP urban garden initiative; the Squirrel Hill Produce to Pantry Volunteer Garden, which is a partnership with Repair the World: Pittsburgh and NCJW.
