Spotlight on Allegheny Eats

allegheny eats helps restaurant workers

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on a new project called Allegheny Eats! Learn more about it.

WHAT IS IT?

Allegheny Eats is a new project aiming to help food industry workers and producers affected by COVID-19. It is sponsored by Sustainable Pittsburgh in partnership with CRAFT at Chatham University, Pittsburgh Food Policy Council, PASA (PA Association for Sustainable Agriculture), Black Radish Kitchen, Pittsburgh Restaurant Workers Aid, 412 Food Rescue, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and the City of Pittsburgh. Their mission is “to secure the future for our restaurants, farmers, and service industry workers with the help of food lovers beyond the COVID-19 crisis.”

HOW DOES IT WORK?

As a food lover wanting to help support our local food industry, you can purchase a meal kit from one of four participating restaurants. (Bae Bae’s Kitchen, Black Radish Kitchen, Casa Brasil, and The Vandal) Ordering by Tuesday allows you to pick your meal kit up from the restaurant by Thursday of that same week.

As a food industry worker, you can order up to two meal kits every week for FREE! This offer aims to reduce food insecurity and promote solidarity with food industry workers during COVID-19.

Important items to note:

  • Meal kits can sell out, so ordering early is best
  • Meal kits change seasonally based on available local ingredients

Some insights from the website:

  • “As more people utilize the site to buy meal kits or make donations, it will help us raise money to expand the program to bring in more restaurants and feed more workers.”
  • “…each meal kit on Allegheny Eats contains locally sourced produce and products. This helps our farmers and producers know how much to plant for the upcoming growing season and reduces the amount of spoilage during harvest time because that food is accounted for — at Allegheny Eats!”
  • “With one delicious purchase, you can thank & support restaurant workers, help sustain local farms and producers, reduce food waste, and keep your favorite restaurants running.”
