BACK 2 SCHOOL STORE 2020 FACT SHEET
SPONSOR: National Council of Jewish Women, Pittsburgh Section
GOAL: To provide elementary school children in need with clothing, school supplies and other necessities that will help create positive self-esteem and enthusiasm so that the children will be ready to focus on learning when they return to school in the fall.
DATE: Sunday, July 19, 2020
SITE: East End of Pittsburgh
WHO WILL BENEFIT: Approximately 600 children, grades K-5, from pre-qualified households, will be eligible to receive items to help prepare them for that important first day of school. We partner with local agencies like the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and East End Cooperative Ministries (EECM) to identify children to participate in the Back 2 School StoreTM. Over 500 volunteers will be trained and given an opportunity for a day of direct service.
HOW IT WORKS: The Back 2 School StoreTM is set up like a department store. Volunteer personal shoppers accompany the children as they shop for brand new clothing and school supplies in their favorite colors and styles at NO COST to the families. While the children shop, parents and other caregivers can visit the onsite Family Resource Center featuring health and nutrition information, as well as community and social service resources.
WHAT A CHILD RECEIVES: Each child will shop for free for a complete new outfit of clothing (shirt, pants, sweatshirt, socks, underwear, and sneakers), plus a winter coat, hat and gloves. They will also select a new backpack, school supplies, a new book, and other personal care items.
FUNDING SOURCES: NCJW, Pittsburgh Section, will seek cash gifts, merchandise, in-kind donations and support from local and national companies, foundations, community organizations and individuals.
