JF&CS offers a wealth of services for our older adults

On Thursday, November 3, AgeWell Pittsburgh held a valuable health fair at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill.  AgeWell Pittsburgh is the collaboration of JF&CS, the Jewish Association on Aging and the Jewish Community Center that serves as a one-stop shop for services and support to our community’s older adults and their families.

The health fair served as a great reminder of the large number of services available to help individuals and families meet the challenges of aging.

As part of the AgeWell Pittsburgh continuum of services, JF&CS is well positioned to assist older adults and their families address the issues associated with aging, offering a wide range of services including geriatric care coordination, in-home caregivers and home-based counseling services for those unable to come into the office.

Our information and referral specialist Maxine Horn staffs the AgeWell Pittsburgh telephone line. Last year, she helped more than 1,000 people find solutions to issues related to aging.

JF&CS geriatric care coordinators — Pearl Averbach, Sandy Budd, and Stefanie Small — are licensed clinical social workers and Certified Care Managers. Together, they have more than 50 years of experience in geriatric care management and psychotherapy.

We can help identify strengths, healthcare needs, safety issues and resources to meet your changing needs and challenges related to aging.

  • Know all of your options. An aging loved ones’ only option isn’t necessarily to move out of their home. With JF&CS’s home care coordination, licensed home care registry (the Caregiver Connection) and tools like our ElderAlert personal emergency response system, many services are available to help our community’s older adults obtain the highest level of independence, comfort and safety consistent with their capacity and preferences for care.
  • Put a care plan into action. The signs of aging can be subtle. A trained professional can help families who are grappling with how to address the challenges of aging, can help identify when it’s time to put a plan into action and provide families with the necessary resources and referrals.
  • Get involved! Our Brain Builders Club is an 8-week program that can help slow cognitive decline through a combination of creative arts, physical activity and computer skills.
  • For caregivers, take care of yourself. We offer support groups for family caregivers because rest and recuperation are essential for those providing care.

JF&CS approaches aging from all perspectives to give families options instead of ultimatums. We’re here for families and individuals every step of the way, providing peace of mind and compassionate care. Call AgeWell Pittsburgh at 412.422.0400 for more information.
