JF&CS Annual Meeting Photo Gallery & SOS Video

I want to thank all of you who came to the May 19th JF&CS Annual Meeting. Thank you, again, to Barbara Shapira, for doing such a wonderful job as chair.

We had an excellent turnout, and JF&CS board chair Carolyn Mendelson and I were grateful for the opportunity to share our many accomplishments of the past year, as well as the challenges we faced and expect to face in the coming year.

For those of you who were unable to join us, JF&CS officer Wendy Mars received this year’s Dr. Howard A. Mermelstein Leadership Award. All three of the late Dr. Mermelstein’s children – Bob, Margie and Jan – were there to present the award. Wendy gave a very heartfelt response, honoring the memory of Dr. Mermelstein who touched numerous lives through his pediatric practice and his work at JF&CS; and reinforcing the importance of the work of our agency in helping those struggling with lifecycle transitions and crises.

We also debuted a video about our SOS Pittsburgh critical needs and emergency assistance program. This program was established in 2005 with the help of Sandy and Edgar Snyder, whose continued support is invaluable. Modeled on a similar program they had established in the former Soviet Union, SOS Pittsburgh provides a safety net of last resort for individuals and families who are struggling and have nowhere else to turn. This coming fiscal year will continue to present numerous challenges created by the ever-growing number of people who need our help while, at the same time, we are experiencing cuts in critical funding. But with the staunch support of our community we are confident that JF&CS can continue to provide the programs and services that create the kind of caring community we all need.
