In this together: Helping families and their special-needs children

Parenting challenges come in many forms. If you are a parent of a child with special needs, however, common concerns take on a completely different dimension. Medical needs, adapting to school and other socials settings, continuing education, meaningful employment and independent life skills are just some of the concerns that family members of children with disabilities – both young and grown – may encounter.

Whether a child is still in school or is an adult with changing needs, JF&CS offers a range of services to help families cope and adapt, no matter the circumstance.  We strive to advocate for inclusions in the community, as JF&CS Resource Coordinator Linda Marino wrote about in this month’s Pittsburgh Toy Lending Library newsletter. This includes offering advocacy in school systems, sponsoring trainings of interest for those with disabilities and their families and various support groups.

Growing Together, a support group for family members of adults with special needs, allows parents and others to share information, resources and stories with other families. It is professionally facilitated by Marino, who has more than 25 years of experience in special needs information & referral, service coordination and advocacy. She is also the parent of an adult child with special needs.

There are lifelong challenges for parents of children with special needs. JF&CS and Squirrel Hill Psychological Services’ comprehensive approach and compassionate support can help make the journey a little easier.
