Celebrate Purim Pittsburgh in Squirrel Hill on March 20th!

Jewish Family & Children’s Service is one of several community organizations collaborating on Purim Pittsburgh, a community-wide festival to be held on Sunday, March 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Squirrel Hill.
Purim is a joyous festival that commemorates the Jewish people being spared from annihilation in ancient Persia. It is traditionally celebrated by reading the Megillah (the Book of Esther), and through festive meals and sending gifts of food to the poor and to friends and neighbors. In recent years, many congregations have developed a tradition of holding Purim carnivals with holiday-themed games and contests, mostly aimed at children.

Purim Pittsburgh was conceived to bring people of all ages together in a public street fair leading up to Purim, which this year falls on Thursday, March 24. The event is being led by JF&CS, Repair the World: Pittsburgh, nextgen:pgh and J’Burgh, and is based upon the success of the Squirrel Hill Night Markets, which closed off parts of Murray Avenue and featured food and craft vendors and public art and music presentations.
Purim Pittsburgh will be centered on Darlington Road at Murray Avenue and will include a costume parade, kosher food vendors, performing arts performances, community service projects and fun activities for people of all ages. Other sponsoring organizations include the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and Moishe House.

The festivities are timed to follow the JCC’s Purim carnival, scheduled to take place from 1 to 4 p.m.

Purim Pittsburgh is intended to bring together the Squirrel Hill community and encourage civic and community involvement and volunteerism. We hope you’ll join us for this exciting community-wide celebration!
