Bringing the light of Hanukkah to seniors in our community

This Hanukkah, as we light a candle on each festive night and bring more light into the world, let us dedicate ourselves to pushing back the darkness and pain experienced by too many of our neighbors who struggle to put enough nutritious food on their tables.

As many seniors in our community are struggling and coping with life’s changes and challenges, sometimes food insecurity and hunger can hit the hardest. As you light the Hanukkah candles, please consider dedicating each night to learning more about the food insecurity affecting so many, and to helping Jewish Family & Children’s Service eliminate senior hunger.

Through the work of JF&CS, the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry (SHCFP) and our Solutions to Senior Hunger (SSH) program, and with the help of community partners and supporters like you, we are striving to make this holiday season a little brighter for seniors in our community.

The SSH program, made possible by a grant and technical assistance from MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, assists older adults ages 50+ by screening for SNAP (food stamp) eligibility and connecting them to benefits to which they may be entitled.

JF&CS also offers assistance for older adults including information and referral services through AgeWell Pittsburgh, a partnership of JF&CS, the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Association on Aging; counseling and support groups to help seniors and their loved ones cope with and manage the challenges of aging; AgeWell Rides, our free transportation service connecting volunteer drivers with older adults who do not or cannot drive, and much more.

This Hanukkah, please help us reach every senior who experiences hunger or hardship by recommending them to our agency for services to help them reach a better day.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please contact us today.
