Position title:  AmeriCorps Refugee Medical Caseworker (through Literacy Pittsburgh’s Compass AmeriCorps program).

Time span:      Full-time for 10 months: September 2019-July 2020

Salary:             Stipend provided; healthcare arranged

Community Need:  Resettling refugees is a huge undertaking and were it not for dedicated AmeriCorps members, volunteers, interns and community participation, it could not be done. AmeriCorps members bring the hands-on support, enthusiasm and energy that newly arriving refugees need to begin the transition to their new surroundings in their new American home.

Position Summary: This member will focus on connecting newly arriving refugee families to critical services with a special focus on healthcare.

Essential Functions:
–Field service: 50% of the time member will accompany mostly limited English-speaking refugee clients to appointments. For medical appointments, members will be present at appointment to ensure that clients’ needs are understood, that interpretation is provided and appropriate follow-up is provided. Members provide education on the U.S. healthcare system and other related services.

–Appointment scheduling: 25% including requesting interpretation, arranging transportation and informing/reminding clients of appointments (using interpretation)

–Communication: 25% communicating with refugee team, writing case notes, filling out applications for clients and related administrative tasks.

Qualifications:
–Undergraduate degree, exceptions for bilingual or immigrant/refugee members. Car required and willingness to transport clients.

–Ability to function in busy, dynamic environment. Flexibility to change activities when more pressing needs arise. Comfort with people who do not speak English and from very different backgrounds; willingness to use interpretation. Ability to adhere to program policies around building client independence rather than fostering dependence.
