Counseling & Support Groups

Aging presents challenges that can be overwhelming for everyone involved. For aging adults, it might be a growing mental infirmity, the death of a spouse or the loss of independence. For adult children, it may be the stress of juggling the care of an older parent with the demands of families and jobs.

How We Help

  • Our professional staff—licensed clinical social workers and geriatric psychiatrists—are adept at addressing the psychological challenges of aging. A comprehensive evaluation is the first step in determining the nature of the problem and developing and implementing an effective plan of care.
  • We offer a wide range of services including individual and family counseling, home-based services for those unable to come into the office and psychiatric assessment and medication treatment.
  • Our Brain Builders Club is an eight-week program (twice per week) that engages participants in mental and physical exercises that stimulate the brain for strengthened and increased cognitive function.
  • For family caregivers, the most important responsibility beyond caring for your loved one is caring for yourself. Self-care is not a selfish act—it's an essential act. If you burn out, become overly stressed, exhausted or ill, you are no help to anyone else. JF&CS can provide individual counseling, and also has a caregivers' support group designed to help family caregivers protect their emotional and physical health.

Meet the People We Help

  • When her 90-year-old father is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease dementia, Janice* is forced to take on the added responsibility of caring for him while working full-time and raising her own small children. Burnout becomes a very real danger as the stress piles up and frustration and despair take hold.

  • After the sudden death of her husband, 62-year-old Sylvia* was crippled with grief and anxiety. But vision and mobility problems made it impossible for the widow to seek the emotional help she needed, and her son helped her to find it through JF&CS.
