Emergency Assistance

You can turn to JF&CS for emergency assistance during a crisis. We will work with you to understand your situation, identify solutions and help you access them.

How We Help

  • All assistance is offered in the context of working with JF&CS's Critical Needs Resource Coordinator or our Social Service & Critical Needs Coordinator at JF&CS's Squirrel Hill Food Pantry allowing us to address not only your immediate crisis, but to work with you on a plan to improve long-term well-being.
  • In some cases, emergency needs are fully addressed by resources identified through the review process, without the need for financial assistance. Where financial assistance is determined to be necessary, we will look to community resources and, where none are available, turn to our SOS Pittsburgh fund. Through SOS Pittsburgh, limited financial funds are available to help pay for various emergencies such as avoiding eviction, transportation to allow a parent to get to work, medical needs, past due utility bills, critical home repair or warm clothing. Screening is required by the Social Service & Critical Needs Coordinator at JF&CS's Squirrel Hill Food Pantry (where SOS Pittsburgh is administered) and assistance must be approved by the review committee of SOS Pittsburgh.
  • Emergency food is available through JF&CS's Squirrel Hill Food Pantry.

Meet the People We Help

  • As a new client at the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, JF&CS learned that Jacob* was an older adult who not only needed food but might soon need a place to live since he was without a job and way to pay rent.

  • Unexpected car repairs can lead to much bigger problems if Sara* can’t get to work to support her family.
